Do you have old furniture pieces that you can’t figure out how to get that funky smell out of it?? I have refinished quite a few pieces and have loved the finish look. Most have drawers for storage; however, truth be told, most have sat empty because the inside SMELLS! I’m not sure why it didn’t cross my mind when refinishing it- I guess I was too busy trying to make the outside look pretty. Since then, I have tried a few things to get the smell out, some of which have worked, others not so much. Here is what has worked the best for me to get the funky smell out of old furniture!

- furniture cleaner or Windex or baby wipes
- equal parts of water and vinegar in spray bottle
- Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer for all surfaces
Before you start painting a piece of furniture, make sure you wipe it down real well, inside and out. Painting on top of dust and gunk makes for a clumpy finish. I normally use Windex or baby wipes (did you know baby wipes have many more uses than just for baby bottoms?!). For the inside, I spray water and vinegar(equal parts mixed into a spray bottle) and wipe it down with a wet rag, rinsing the rag (and squeezing out all excess water) occasionally. I let it thoroughly air out for a day or so after that.
Sometimes, this is all it takes to get rid of the smell, but in my experience, that sometimes is very rare. I use Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer for all surfaces to mask the smells. This has done such a great job of hiding all the funky smells!!I spray all over the interior of the furniture getting every nook and cranny. It is ok if it is splotchy- that is completely normal for primer!!! You can then paint over the primer in any color you want and enjoy odorless furniture! This is a cabinet and desk I am currently working on. Zinsser also makes another heavy duty stain blocker called Zinsser B-I-N Ultimate Stain Blocker, however, so far, the 1-2-3 primer has worked just fine for me and no odors have returned. If I ever need super, heavy duty odor removal, I will definitely give this second one a try!
Stay tuned for the before and after of this cabinet! My Christmas Home Tour and other Christmas projects will be up soon!
